Weltkriegs verschollen.

Holy Words and Low Folly in A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This essay offers a re-interpretation of the Dream’s central religious allusion, the echo of 1 Corinthians 2.9-10 in Bottom’s ‘vision’ speech. It is argued that the speech’s signification must be understood as contextualized by the utilization made of holy reference throughout the Dream. To this end the text highlights a number of religious allusions (some previously unremarked), and demonstrates the nature of these appropriations as offering dislocation to the references’ sacred indication.

The Romance of Certain Old Texts: Henry James and Shakespeare

In “The Romance of Certain Old Clothes”, an early tale of Henry James’s, two sisters bear the names of young Shakespearean heroines. Biographical critics have seen in their rivalry a reflection of the author’s relations with his brother William. This essay is more interested in the clothes, and the fears and desires to which they give rise. The sisters’ antagonism provides the model for a debate that runs through James’s thinking about property, legacy and memory: on the one hand a dream of total control, on the other of wholesale dispersal. If the violence with which this early tale ends is unusual for James, the threat of it is never absent, and this is a key to the way Shakespeare works in his imagination, that he is often associated with injury, especially in Othello and Hamlet.

Versions and Versioning: A Critical Archive of D. H. Lawrence

The essay gives an account of the dealings of the editors of the Cambridge University Press Works of D. H. Lawrence series with the archive of Lawrence manuscript and other materials distributed in special collections of libraries around the world, collected mainly from the 1950s as his star began to rise. The essay considers the recent arguments of Suzanne Bost, making use of Jacques Derrida’s argument in his essay “Archive Fever”, about the inevitably preconditioned interpretation of archival materials (Derrida) and the need to give them air before settling into a program of editorial or other analysis (Bost).

From the Pueblos to Cambridge: Lawrence’s Mornings in Mexico and Other Essays

Mornings in Mexico and Other Essays provides striking individual examples of the creative process that emerged throughout the work on the Lawrence Cambridge edition – Lawrence’s characteristic method of revising himself through successive writings. (See Paul Eggert’s “Versions and Versioning” elsewhere in this issue.) The recent Cambridge volume brings together all the essays Lawrence wrote in America (and later) about Southwestern and Mexican Indians, allowing a spacious look at this oeuvre. Following the links and the differences from essay to essay reveals another kind of “difference” – that is, Lawrence’s developing ideas on “cultural difference”. Some of these essays have been among his most controversial or overlooked; their texts have often contained editorial corruptions that altered them; and they were scattered for years in Mornings in Mexico, the Phoenix and early letter volumes, and elsewhere, so that readers often viewed them in partial forms and in isolation from each other.

A New Edition of Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady

The new volume of “The Cambridge Edition of the Complete Fiction of Henry James”, containing The Portrait of a Lady, is reviewed, especially its genesis, unconventional choice of copy text, its full textual notes, explanatory notes and appendices.

Besprechungen / Allgemeines

Nicola McLelland: German through English Eyes: A History of Language Teaching and Learning in Britain 1500-2000 (Fremdsprachen in Geschichte und Gegenwart, 15).

This is a comprehensive overview of the development of German language teaching in Britain, a learned, detailed, fascinating tour through five centuries. To take first its readership: beyond the sub-set of German teachers who are interested in the history of language teaching in their subject – and the ‘massive response’ to the author’s radio broadcast suggests that this may not be as limited a group as one might think – where else will a book as well written as this find readers? Two potential fields come to mind: British social history and gender studies.

Medieval into Renaissance. Essays for Helen Cooper. Ed. Andrew King, Matthew Woodcock.

This collection of twelve essays by scholars taught and supervised by Helen Cooper derives its name from her first monograph, Pastoral: Medieval into Renaissance, in 1977. It is a programmatic title because it implies continuity, inheritance, and preservation as well as memory, rather than transition or novelty. As the two editors profess: “The recognition that medieval and Renaissance studies entail tracing patterns of both continuity and change, looking both backwards and forwards, and paying attention to specificities of genre, region, class, language and medium, places a particular premium upon the micro-historical approach and individual case-studies...”.

The Bedford Shakespeare, Based on the New Cambridge Shakespeare Edition. Ed. Russ McDonald and Lena Cowen Orlin.

Reaching almost two thousand pages and priced at $ 84.99 (app. 77.00 €), this onevolume edition of Shakespeare’s twenty-five “most frequently taught plays” (none of his poems are included) may seem a little intimidating at first sight. Statistically, and as opposed to their North American counterparts, European students tend to go more for (cheaper) individual play volumes, but the trend is changing, and the Bedford Shakespeare, which in fact offers very good value for money, may help modify those habits. This edition is clearly aimed at the (North American) undergraduate market, although it may well appeal to other markets too.

Adam G. Hooks: Selling Shakespeare. Biography, Bibliography, and the Book Trade.

Montaigne’s comment that “I and my book are one” could apply to Adam Hooks’s argument in Selling Shakespeare (although not in the way that Montaigne meant). As Hooks explains, this is “a story about how books and the booktrade shaped Shakespeare’s life and afterlife”. His story inverts the conventional narrative, exploring not what Shakespeare’s reputation did for stationers, but how stationers created Shakespeare’s reputation.

Alessandro Serpieri: Shakespeare’s Drama in Poetry (SKENÊ: Theatre and Drama Studies, 2).

The late Alessandro Serpieri was a leading figure in Italian and international twentieth-century literary structuralism and semiology, especially as it deals with the English Renaissance. His translation of Shakespeare’s Sonnets into Italian (1991), complete with introduction and commentary, is a major contribution to the field of creative interpretation. The present collection of critical essays devoted to the Sonnets includes three seminal studies written over the years and first published in Italian: “Shakespeare’s Immortality Sonnets. An Agon against Time” (1975, 1998), “Sonnets 33 and 29. Conflict between Two Cultural Models” (1976, 1998) and “Shakespeare against Iago” (1994).

A Book of Homage to Shakespeare to Commemorate the Three Hundredth Anniversary of Shakespeare’s Death MCMXVI. Edited by Israel Gollancz. Reissued with a new introduction by Gordon McMullan to commemorate the Four Hundreth Anniversary of Shakespeare’s Death.

A Tribute to the Belgian King and People from representative Men and Women throughout the World (London 1914).

John Beer: D. H. Lawrence – Nature, Narrative, Art, Identity.

With his D. H. Lawrence – Nature, Narrative, Art, Identity, John Beer, Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the University of Cambridge, sets out to offer, as the blurb on the back cover of his book argues, “a new interpretation of D. H. Lawrence’s works during his lifetime […] concentrating on his exceptionally acute powers of observation, both human and natural.” The volume is and subdivided into 16 chapters plus an introduction and an appendix; the chapters range from “Fresh Think ing at the Turn of the Century” via “Frieda von Richthofen and her Background” to “An Elusive Identity” and an appendix titled: “Lawrence’s Sexuality and his Supposed ‘Fascism’”. It reads well and is elegantly written, however it does contain typos and spacing errors which should not have escaped the proofreader.

Judith Ruderman: Race and Identity in D. H. Lawrence, Indians, Gypsies and Jews

Judith Ruderman’s book focuses on three types of “racial others”, two of which – the Gypsies and the Jews – have rarely been studied before in relation to D.H. Lawrence. Though it is a dense scholarly book including an 88-page-long critical apparatus, it reads easily. The unifying theme of its nine chapters, which might read as a series of separate articles, is Lawrence’s racial thought. In her long introduction, Ruderman, after stressing Lawrence’s many contradictions, carefully situates his argument for an intrinsic separation of the races and his tendency to stereotyping in the ideological context of the time.
