Biomassebrennstoff aus Hausmüll
Ergebnisse des EU-LIFE+ Vorhabens MARSS

Supported by the EU LIFE program a demonstration plant for the biomass-fuel production from MSW has been built in the Trier MBT plant. In addition to the existing biological drying system a special sorting and separation module, called the MARSS module, has been operated (MARSS=Material Advances Recovery Sustainable Systems). The goal was to separate the biomass with particle size less 40 mm from the dry MSW with approximately 15 % humidity. The tests have proved that about 30 M.-% of the MBT feedstock can be separated as biomass fuel. The calorific value of this renewable energy source is higher than 11 MJ/kg. Test work was done in a small fluidized bed combustion unit. The quality of the MSW based biomass fuel was always suitable to the combustion technology. The main goal of the LIFE project MARSS was to prove that the most important European MSW pretreatment technology MBT with more than 330 plants can be developed to a biomass fuel production with an applied additional technology. The technical ability was shown and also the suitable economy for a fuel production has been calculated. Socioeconomic studies combined with several national studies outline both the options and limitations for new technology in the waste treatment area of different EU memberstates.
