This article argues that the revaluation of solitude in the Age of Enlightenment and Sentimentality is closely connected to changes in the traditional system of literary genres which took place in the second half of the 18th century. The soliloquy profoundly shapes the aesthetics of three fashionable literary genres: the epistolary novel, the monodrama and the lyrical poem. Examining how Goethe’s novel “Werther” reflects and radicalises the genre aesthetics of auto-communication allows us to make a more precise determination of its significance in literary history than its current description as a monologue disguised as letters.
