Der literarische Topos der Übersetzung in Mittelalter und Neuzeit

Vor dem Hintergrund des Wandels in der Auffassung von Literatur, der sich an der Schwelle vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit vollzieht – von der Legitimation durch antike Quellen hin zum Originalitätsanspruch der literarischen Schöpfung – untersucht dieser Beitrag Rolle und Funktion der Übersetzung als literarischer Topos. War der Verweis auf die Übersetzung im Mittelalter ein produktives Verfahren zur Stützung der auctoritas und Teil der “symbolischen Wahrheit”, so dient er in der Neuzeit als Vorwand zur Aufrechterhaltung der Authentizitätsfiktion, auf den der Autor zu unterschiedlichen Zwecken zurückgreift. Die Einführung kultureller und literarischer Neuerungen spielt dabei ebenso eine Rolle wie die spielerische Distanzierung von der Fabel und die parodistische Verwendung der rhetorischen Figur.

Taking as its point of reference the change in the definition of literature which occurred between the late Middle Ages and the beginning of our modern era – from the author’s necessity of using the authors of antiquity as a legitimating source to the author’s claim of creating an original work of art – this essay discusses the role and function of translation as a literary topic. Whereas the reference to translation in the Middle Ages used to be a productive device in order to corroborate the text’s authority and was considered a part of its “symbolic truth”, in Modern Times it is a way of maintaining the fiction of authenticity, of which the author makes use for a number of different purposes. The introduction of cultural and literary innovations plays as large a role in this technique as does the fact that authors playfully distance themselves from the plot and use this rhetorical device satirically.
