Don Fairservice: Film Editing. History, Theory and Practice.

“All editing is invisible”. With this dictum of film editor Ralph Rosenblum Donald Fairservice’s survey of Film editing begins. A great deal has been written on the montage of filmic images. The last scholarly investigation to receive wide critical acclaim was Gilles Deleuze’s philosophical view on filmic space and time, Cinéma 1. L’image-mouvement (Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1983) and Cinéma 2. L’image-temps (Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1985). But while Deleuze focuses on the philosophical implications of film editing, Fairservice limits his research to filmed fiction as it has evolved in America and Europe, concentrating mainly on to the first thirty-five years of cinema history.
