This article shows the existential importance of film consumption in the Swiss and Jerusalem exile of the German-Jewish poet Else Lasker-Schüler. While she was impo - verished, constrained and desperate, she enjoyed enrichment, liberation and encouragement through films. Cinema served her as a place of refuge from the humiliating ex perience of everyday life in exile as well as a source of aesthetic resistance to marginalization and persecution. Her sketches of the cinema systematically blur the lines bet - ween life in front of the screen and on the screen. They emphasize the sovereignty of cinema over space and time. Lasker-Schüler was particularly fond of the „adventurous Wild West film with arrow shooting Indians.“ In her correspondence, she invented a wealthy Californian uncle who bequeathed to her his enormous fortune. Ultimately, this Californian fortune is a cypher referring to the films from Hollywood. A special focus of the study is on Lasker-Schüler’s ,playing Indians‘ with their equally Hollywoodfriendly colleagues Gottfried Benn and Thomas Mann.
