In 2007, 74 % of the globally produced Indium went into liquid crystal display (LCD) applications in the form of indium-tin-oxide (ITO). Despite of increasing quantities of waste, the today’s End-of-Life recovery rate of Indium is < 1 %. Due to the high fraction of Indium in LCD equipment, Indium recovery from end-of-life LCD waste is an important step to close the Indium cycle. This research aims at gathering knowledge about Indium occurrence in end-of-life equipment. This is necessary to prepare the road to new Indium recovery processes and to the future material flow management for flat screen TVs and monitors. For the quantification of the Indium content in various equipment types (TVs, monitors, laptops, mobile phones) an analysis technique was developed using nitric acid with a pressure-assisted micro wave digestion and subsequent Indium detection with AAS/ICP analysis. The data show that the Indium content in LCD panels with an average of 0.2 % (200 mg / kg) is very low compared to glass (85 % by weight) and organic compounds (15 % by weight). However, rising disposal prices for unprocessed panels and rising prices of Indium may set incentives for a future Indium recovery. Additionally, it could be shown that the Indium content in LCD panels, according to quantitative information based on non-experimental data in the literature, partly differs from the values shown in this study.
