Einsparpotenziale beim Kunststoffeinsatz durch Industrie, Handel und Haushalte in Deutschland

Die globale Menge an produzierten Kunststoffen und die mit ihrem Verbrauch einhergehenden Abfallberge steigen kontinuierlich. Plastik ist zu einem wichtigen Alltagsprodukt geworden und kann gleichzeitig in verschiedenen Phasen seines Lebenszyklus erhebliche negative Auswirkungen auf Umwelt und Natur haben. Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen abfallpolitischen Debatten rund um das europäische Kreislaufwirtschaftspaket und das Wertstoffgesetz bietet eine vom NABU in Auftrag gegebene Studie des Wuppertal Instituts Einblicke in die verschiedenen Einsatzbereiche von Kunststoffen und stellt Fallbeispiele und Szenarien zu deren Reduktion vor. Ohne eine konsequente politische Rahmensetzung und das Engagement von Industrie, Handel und Verbraucher ist mit einer starken Ausweitung des Kunststoffverbrauchs in Deutschland und Europa zu rechnen. Einigt man sich auf alternative Handlungsweisen, könnten in 2030 je nach Intensität der Vermeidungsmaßnahmen bis zu 80 % an Kunststoffen gegenüber dem Business-as-Usual-Szenario eingespart werden.

The global amount of produced plastics as well as the caused generation of waste is continuously increasing. Plastics have become an essential part of our everyday life. At the same time it can have negative impacts on environment and nature alongside the whole life cycle. Against the background of the European circular economy package as well as of the German raw materials law, a study of the Wuppertal Institute initiated by NABU provides insights into the different fields of application for plastics and presents case studies and scenarios for its reduction. Without a stringent policy framework and engagement by industry, retailers and consumers a strong increase of plastics use in Europe and Germany can be expected. Taking into account available alternatives and depending on the depth of interventions, a reduction of up to 80 % compared to business as usual scenarios could be achieved until 2030.
