One of the largest asbestos mines in Europe is located in Northern Greece, and was in operation from 1982 to 2000. During the peak period, over 80,000 t/a of pure asbestos were produced for the asbestos industry. Within the scope of the EU project LIFE 03 ENV/GR/000214, an innovative landfill concept in accordance with the state of the art was tested. This state of the art, as it is documented in the Technical Rules for Hazardous Materials (TRGS) 519 and TRGS 954, has been established in Germany for many years. A pilot landfill was established on a partial surface in the asbestos mine of MABE in accordance with national and European guidelines for non-hazardous waste. In total ca. 300 t of waste containing asbestos were disposed here. All asbestos-containing waste was treated before disposal (solidified or packed). The investigation data and results obtained within the scope of the EU project are an important basis for the necessary permitting process to operate an asbestos mono-landfill in the former MABE asbestos mine. In addition, an economical solution for the disposal of asbestos wastes from the decontamination of the former productions facilities of MABE is made possible with this innovative concept. The integration of an independent asbestos expert who has no financial relationship with the business conducting the work supervised the protection of the workers, third parties and the environment.
