Frank Erik Pointer: Bawdy and Soul: A Revaluation of Shakespeare’s Sonnets.

Sex and art have long enjoyed a close and fruitful union. Many would suggest that, far from been mutually exclusive, these two essentials of human life are natural byproducts of each other. The artist celebrates the lover; the lover might celebrate his or her feelings through artistic expression. Shakespeare seems not only to exemplify and, arguably, give the most fully realised expression to this relationship throughout all of his plays, but he does so especially in his Sonnets: compact articulations of powerful human feelings (sexual, linguistic, and philosophical), which seem to speak to all of us.
