German Shakespeare Studies at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century. Ed. Christa Jansohn

In this engaging book, Christa Jansohn collects fifteen essays on Shakespearean subjects, published between 1988 and 2004 but mostly clustering around the turn of the current century. Except for Dieter Mehl’s plenary address to the Shakespeare Association of America, all the pieces originated in German and are here translated for the first time. Jansohn thus makes available material “that otherwise would not reach an international readership,” and although her collection disclaims comprehensiveness, staying largely “within the academic world,” it gives the outside world a generous sampling of how German Shakespeareans behave when they are, so to speak, at home.
