Kunststoffabfälle in Gewässern

Ursachen, Folgen und Lösungsansätze

Das globale Wachstum der Kunststoffproduktion führt in Verbindung mit den weitreichenden Anwendungsfeldern von Kunststoffen und ihrer Persistenz sowie der unzureichenden Erfassung der Abfälle zu einer Akkumulation in der Umwelt. Insbesondere der Eintrag von Kunststoffabfällen in Gewässer ist mit weitreichenden Folgen für Mensch und Umwelt verbunden. Schätzungen zufolge treiben 100 bis 140 Millionen Tonnen Müll als herrenloses Gut in den Weltmeeren. Neben diesen marinen Ökosystemen sind auch limnische Gewässer zunehmend mit Kunststoffabfällen belastet. Über die Makrokunststoffe hinaus ist auch die Anreicherung von Mikroplastik in Ökosystemen und Organismen problematisch. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über den derzeitigen Kenntnisstand zu Herkunft, Zusammensetzung und Auswirkungen von Kunststoffabfällen in Gewässern. Abschließend werden Lösungsansätze vorgestellt, um dem Problem wirkungsvoll begegnen zu können.

The global plastic production shows a steady increase. Plastics are characterized by their various scopes of applications as well as their persistent properties. In addition, collection systems for plastic waste are insufficient. As a consequence, plastic materials are accumulated in ecosystems. Especially plastic pollution in water bodies has far-reaching consequences for human beings and the environment.

Approximately 100 to 140 million tonnes of floating trash and plastic debris are assumed to be present in the oceans. Besides marine environments, also limnic water bodies are increasingly contaminated with plastic waste. Apart from macro plastics, also micro plastics and their prevalence, accumulation and distribution in ecosystems and organisms cause problems. This review article is outlining the origins of aquatic pollution by plastic debris, its composition as well as its impacts to water bodies. Furthermore possible mitigation measures are presented in order to tackle the issue of aquatic litter in an effective way.
