One Language, Two Grammars? Differences between British and American English. Ed. Günter Rohdenburg and Julia Schlüter (Studies in English Language). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2009. Pp. xxiii + 461. Cloth £ 60.00.
The differences between British (BrE) and American English (AmE) have kept generations of linguists busy producing a host of books and articles of varying reliability. The 19 chapters in the collection under review (most of which are based on a 2004 Paderborn colloquium) are meant to capture relevant topics showing the most conspicuous grammatical divergences, and based on the most recent data, the intention being to counter the widespread belief that “accent divides, and syntax unites”.
