Philip Rayner, Peter Wall, Stephen Krueger: Media Studies. The Essential Introduction.

Given a veritable flood of “introductions” on the book market these days, reviewers’ warning lights should be flashing when they encounter one that uses “essential” in its title, especially when it comes, unashamedly, in combination with a definite article instead of a more cautious “an”. The media studies textbook under review here is both introductory and essential in that it aims at the pre-undergraduate market, i.e. students taking the new and increasingly popular AS and A Level Media Studies courses, and in that it covers the semiotic, technological, sociological, political and economic aspects of a range of (modern) media phenomena from newspapers, teen magazines and advertisements to radio, cinema and digital TV.
