Every year approx. 60 M t of construction waste is generated in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2018 approx. 46.6 M t of this construction waste was recycled. In order to safeguard the commodity recycling material (RCM) from asbestos contamination, investigation methods for the examination of the building stock as well as piles of debris are available. Surveys carried out under the framework of the research project RECBest show, that systematic examination of buildings allow the reliable identification and containment of asbestos containing materials. This allows the removal of asbestos from the material cycle. Accordingly, the examination of construction waste piles illustrates, that detectable amounts of asbestos contaminate the construction debris, if asbestos containing materials are not sufficiently removed prior to the demolition. From a technical as well as an economic point of view, the survey for asbestos at an early stage of the demolition process is vital, in order to safeguard RCM as a sustainable and safe commodity.
