Shakespeare Jubilees: 1769-2014. Ed. Christa Jansohn and Dieter Mehl (Studien zur englischen Literatur, 27).

On the eve of the 400th anniversary commemorations of the most internationally appealing writer the world has ever known, Christa Jansohn and Dieter Mehl have produced a timely, hefty volume that examines Shakespeare celebrations from David Garrick’s Ur-Jubilee in 1769 to the present day. 18 essays and 48 black-and-white illustrations cover commemorations in Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, the USA, Latin America, New Zealand, Japan, and China. Working with a core of papers first presented at a seminar held in Paris as part of the 450 th anniversary celebrations of Shakespeare’s birth (hosted by the Société Française Shakespeare), Jansohn and Mehl have augmented their discussions with additional, invited contributions; together, these reveal the depth and amplitude of Shakespeare’s embeddedness in the cultural life of much of the world.
