The following article examines lay-linguistic conceptualizations of grammaticality. It is hypothesized that laypeople have their own concept of what can be considered ‘grammatically correct’ and represent it in the framework of subjective theories. Subjective theories can be understood as a practice, since they arise through the perception of language use. Part of subjective theories of grammaticality, the paper postulates, is on the one hand a judgement related to a social norm and on the other hand an individual judgement of taste. The article shows that the multi-component model of attitude is also applicable to subjective theories of grammaticality: the essential factors here are elements of knowledge (cognitive dimension), units of perception (emotive dimension) and schemes of argumentation (conative dimension). An example serves to illustrate the interconnectedness of these components.
