Sue Vice: Holocaust Fiction.

How does one critically evaluate literature that deals with the Holocaust? The magnitude and uniqueness of the complex machinery of dehumanisation and murder have led to its reification as a quasi sacred event in history, a process that becomes evident in the frequently applied term of critique of supposedly inadequate responses to it, that of “sacrilege”. Sue Vice has produced an orderly investigation of some of the most popular and influential fictions of the Holocaust in English. In it she has tried to balance the critical responses to the works with attempts to analyse their formal achievements, but also weaknesses.
