The Book of Margery Kempe. Ed. Barry Windeatt (Longman Annotated Texts).

This new edition of one of the most important and generically evasive late medieval English texts is highly welcome. While medievalists with an interest in textual matters may prefer the text as printed in the EETS-edition (O. S. 212; 1940) with its “obsolete letters”, hyphenation and the capitalisation of the ms, both beginning students and the general reader will probably prefer the modern layout of Windeatt’s text, with its editorial division into paragraphs. Both types of users will certainly appreciate the onpage annotations and commentaries in this new edition. Windeatt’s commentaries on persons, historical events and places mentioned in the text incorporate recent research and will be appreciated by both the general reader and the specialist. Thus, every serious student of The Book of Margery Kempe should have both editions at their elbows.
