Naturalismus und Sozialversicherung

Der Beitrag untersucht anhand der Unfalldarstellung in der naturalistischen Prosa (Gerhart Hauptmanns „Bahnwärter Thiel“, Philipp Langmanns „Ein Unfall“) den Zusammenhang zwischen sozialer und literarischer Modernisierung. Die naturalistische Prosa erweist sich in der Heranziehung von Elementen des Sozialversicherungsdiskurses als eminent modern. Sie bilanziert Folgeschäden von Modernisierung in den Individual- und Sozialverhältnissen. Literatur wird so zu einem sensiblen Seismografen für Veränderungen im Sozialen, die vor allem Fragen der gesellschaftlichen Kohäsion betreffen.

This article examines the connection between social and literary modernisation on the basis of the description of accidents in naturalistic prose (Gerhart Hauptmann’s “Bahnwärter Thiel”, Philipp Langmann’s “Ein Unfall”). Naturalistic prose proves to be eminently modern in its use of elements occurring in the discourse on social security. This accounts for consequential damage from modernisation in individual and social relationships. Literature thus becomes a sensitive seismograph for changes in social thinking, above all on issues of social cohesion.
