Waugh without End. New Trends in Evelyn Waugh Studies

The nineteen articles of the book by scholars from both sides of the Atlantic are based on their contributions for an international conference held at La Rioja University in Spain on the occasion of Waugh’s centenary in 2003 and cover a great variety of subjects from his life and works. The first three study Waugh’s Catholicism, a subject which has been prominent with his critics ever since his conversion in 1930 and even more so after the publication of his “Catholic” novel Brideshead Revisited in 1945. While J. V. Long (“The Consolation of Exile: Waugh and Catholicism”, 11–20) puts Waugh into the context of recusant English Catholics and argues that the idea of exile strongly influenced his life and major works, D. Gallagher (“The Humanizing Factor: E. Waugh’s ‘Very Personal View of Providence’”, 21–36) points out Waugh’s belief in Providence and in a “call” to unique service for each individual, before P. Query (“Catholicism and Form from Hopkins to Waugh”, 37–44) discusses modernist aesthetics in the works of Gerald Manley Hopkins, T. S. Eliot and Waugh and their shared wish to perfectly harmonise form and content.
