William Kuskin: Symbolic Caxton: Literary Culture and Print Capitalism. Notre Dame, Indiana: University of Notre Dame Press, 2008. Pp. xxvi + 390. Paper $ 40.00.

With the publication of Symbolic Caxton, William Kuskin joins a small but venerable group of scholars, including Norman Blake, Lotte Hellinga, and Harold Painter, who have produced book-length studies of the fifteenth-century English printer William Caxton and his works. This monograph’s success lies partly in the fact that it is neither biography nor bibliography alone. Instead, Kuskin takes a trans-generic approach, mining Caxton’s life story for information on his bookish investments, and digging into his printed oeuvre for biographical evidence.
