William Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Ed. Sukanta Chaudhuri (The Arden Shakespeare: Third Series).

Characterized by William Empsom as ‘stiff in the joints and so full of standard doctrine’ (“Fairy Flight in a Midsummer Night’s Dream”, London Review of Books. 1:1 [1979], p. 5), the previous Arden edition of Dream (ed. Harold Brooks) was framed so as to counter the more radical readings that had been made popular by the work of Jan Kott and Peter Brooks. Arden’s new edition takes account of both traditional and dissident lines of interpretation and settles on a critical mid-point between the two. For editor Sukanta Chaudhuri, Dream is best understood as a ‘comedy of compromise’; meaning that while the edition is happy to highlight Dream’s unorthodoxies, it never presents the play as strident or debauched. The new text gives a welcome focus to the play as performance, and such an approach well suits Chaudhuri’s instincts. He is ever alert to the management and realization of stage action, and his contributions to this area deserve lasting influence.
