The myth of Troy has fed human imagination and supplied heroes for literary elaboration for millennia. Following the exegetic principles of the concept of translatio imperii, many medieval writers read and rewrote the history of the Trojan war in their own national contexts. The story of the growth and fall of a city through individual and collective acts of heroes involved in politics and war lent itself easily to literary debates on nationhood.
