Along with the development of a clear notion of aesthetic autonomy towards the end of the eighteenth century, ‘Darstellung’ [‘presentation’] was established as an aesthetic concept. Using Goethe’s essay on “The Metamorphosis of Plants” as an example, this article examines how scientific texts of the period also utilised the concept of Darstellung in the process of replacing the scientific ‘non-knowledge’ of nature by aesthetic knowledge.
